Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. In her early years, she battled an obsessive-compulsive disorder and suffered anxiety linked to the word association. Ford was first attracted to acting when she was a teenager and joined the National Youth Theatre. She was admitted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after just one week she realized that she didn't fit in. Ford later applied for a place at the Central School of Speech and Drama and received an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler who is a character that was recurring on Doctor Who. Ford completed her degree in 1993 however in the meantime she already had made her debut on television in the 1991 season in the show Surgical Spirit; she adopted her professional title "Catherine Tate". Tate was on television in the Nineties in shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Tate was also a regular performer in the theatre, and later joined The Royal Shakespeare Company during its season 2000-2001. However, Tate quickly began gaining notice for her stand-up comedy, which she added to her repertoire in 1996.
